Not A Wizkid? The Thought Of Building A Website Gives You Nightmare During Daytime?
Well, This One’s For You Then!
By Anam Tahir
Your number is the next in a crowd of 1 billion.
Yup, that’s right!
Did you know 571 new websites are created each minute?
I never knew it could be possible for me.
A tech-illiterate person like me, running her own websites… Woah!
Thanks to WordPress.
What Is WordPress?
WordPress is a software used to build websites with simple clicks, drag and drop.
It has done-for-you coding that allows any layman to build websites within a matter of few hours.
You don’t need to be an expert or hire a tech wizard and pay thousands of dollars to build a beautiful, professional looking website for you.
You can do it yourself in a snap!
Let me tell you how.
Step 0. Choosing a Web Hosting Service Provider
To build a website the first step is to find a company that’ll provide you with web hosting services for your website.
Web hosting is providing a virtual storage and space for your website.
Just like your home is located in a certain town or street, your website has to be located with a certain host of your choice.
So far, the best web hosting service providers are:
My personal favorite is Digital Business Lounge.
It’s a dream come true for an online entrepreneur.
Every single tool that you need to get your digital business up and running is available under one roof.
You don’t need to go here and there and get your feet stuck in so many places.
So, for the rest of the post I’ll stick to Digital Business Lounge (DBL) to show you how you can create your website in few easy-to-follow steps.
HOW TO CREATE A WEBSITE STEP BY STEP WITH DIGITAL BUSINESS LOUNGE?
Step 1. Go to Dashboard
Step 2. Buy a Domain Name
In a layman’s language, a domain is the Internet address of your website.
These are all domain names.
The suffix can vary. For commercial purposes, .com is the most famous. Dot co (.co) is the new hot top level domain for business websites.
To build website the foremost thing is to get a domain name.
The best option could be your name. For example, sarahpaulin.com
But it can also be your brand’s name, or something reflecting your business type.
For example, my website’s domain name entrepedia101.com is reflective of my business nature. Training for beginner online entrepreneurs.
But many a times, the domain that you want to buy is already taken. So you’ll have to brainstorm for a good domain.
I got mine finalized after a list of 100 domains. No exaggeration.
i. Go to System Setup on your dashboard. Click Domain.
ii. To buy a domain name come up with a list of domain, choose the suffix that you want (.com, .net, whatever) and click on the button that says “Check Domain Availability”.
If it’s not available, it will show this message in red.
If it’s available, the following message will be displayed.
iii. Choose Yes from the drop down menu because it will ensure the privacy of your domain information and click Buy Domain.
Step 3. Install WordPress
i. Go to Installers on the left hand side of your dashboard.
ii. Click on Install WordPress Site button on the right.
Step 4. Choose a Theme
A window will pop open. See below.
What is a theme?
A WordPress theme is a pack of coding to stylize your website.
You can make customizations in your theme to get your desired outlook for your website.
You can customize your website in anything that you can think of. The images, the placing of the images, the text, the fonts, the colors. Anything!
- Add a Theme
In DBL you have tens of themes to choose from.
But you can also search for other themes on Google and download them.
For paid themes Envato Market > Theme Forest is the best place to go to.
For your online business some great themes are:
– Optimize Press
– Beaver Builder
My personal favorite is Divi.
This website is built using Divi.
It is SO simple and easy to use with drag and drop builders. (Divi membership site provides you with all the detailed video tutorials on how to use the theme)
ii. Once you’ve chosen your theme, in the drop down menu click New Install.
A window will pop open asking you to fill out some basic information such as the WordPress username that you want to keep, your password, email address, and the title of the website that will show on the front page.
Don’t worry about the title, you can always come back and change it.
iii. And click Install WordPress.
Your website is installed and ready to rock and roll!
Step 4. Log Into Your Website’s Dashboard
You can always login to your website manually by entering the url:
DBL has a very powerful auto-login feature.
Just click on the AutoLogin button and you’re taken directly to your dashboard.
Step 5. Start Customizing Your Website.
i. Creating Pages
Page in WordPress is where you create content that remains static and does not need to be changed on a regular basis.
– Home page (contains basic information about your brand)
– About page (information about you, how you started your brand, what your brand is about)
– Blog page (where all the blog posts are stacked up)
– Contact page (where your visitors can contact you via email)
– Product/Services Page (where you have details about your product range)
How To Create Pages?
Go to Dashboard > Pages > Add New
Write the title in the title bar and your text in the box below. Then hit Publish. If you don’t want to publish it immediately you can save it as a draft to be published later.
ii. Menu Bar
Menu bar is the top bar that you see on a website that displays what that website contains. Basically, it categorizes your website into a few heads.
Examples of Menu categories:
Following is the menu for my website.
To create your menu bar such as the one above, first you have to create pages that’ll be categorized as the menu items.
How To Build Menu?
Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Menus.
Select the pages that you want to keep in the menu. Arrange them in the order you want.
To create sub- categories just drag the box to a little right under the parent category.
iii. Side Bar and Footer
It is the column that you see either on the left or the right side of your web page. It can have as many items as you want.
I only have a couple of items in my side bar.
How To Create Side Bar?
To create you sidebar go to Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets.
Widgets are the items that you want to appear in your side bar and footer area.
Choose the items from the left hand side that you want to appear in your side bar.
Simply drag and drop them under the area where it says Side Bar.
Customize each item if you want to by clicking the drop down menu.
You have a choice of making the side bar visible to your specified pages in Divi.
Footer is the bottom bar that you see on a website. This bar appears on every page by default.
How To Create Footer?
To create your footer settings go to Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets and choose what you want.
See the image above.
Step 6. Install Plugins
Plugins are pret-codes.
They are done-for-you codes, ready to be installed to add various functions to your website.
The social share buttons that you see on this website’s homepage is a plugin that I installed and activated. I customized my settings as per my requirements.
You’ll need to install some basic plugins to enhance the functionality of your website such as social share buttons, social follow buttons, subscription pop-ups, etc.
How To Install Plugins?
Go to Dashboard > Plugins > Add New and follow the following steps.

Step 7. Writing Posts
A post is different from a page.
Post in WordPress is where you write your blog post. As you keep writing the latest post will appear on top and the older ones will do down.
A page on the other hand is something that is used for keeping a static content such as the content on your home page about your brand, About Me content etc.
How To Write A Post?
To write your post, go to Dashboard > Post > Add New.
If you don’t have a flair for writing or you don’t have the time to write, then DBL offers you services of professional writers to write for you. The hiring fee depends on the number of words.
Step 8. Legal Documents
Legal Documents are legal forms crafted by licensed attorneys that you use to protect the interest of your business and you over the course of a company’s lifetime.
It’s vital to have legal documents for your website to build its authenticity.
Common examples are:
– Income Disclosures
There are many online tools to create legal templates.
